110 miles west of Salt Lake City, we pulled off Interstate 80 via a rest stop and onto the Bonneville Salt Flats. Thankfully, it was very dry when we visited (middle of the summer), so we had no trouble driving onto the flats and getting out to explore. Our plan was to stay on the Salt Flats for about 30 minutes as the sun reflecting off of the salt is quite intense–we wanted to limit exposure for the kids and ourselves. Honestly, if you are just driving out to have a look and snap a few photos, half an hour is all you need.
Fun fact: the Bonneville Salt Flats is home to the Bonneville Speedway where several land speed records have been set. No racing for us, though it would have been pretty cool to see what Carpe could do on the salt flats 😉
The kids couldn’t wait to get out of the car and explore the incredible landscape. After we explained to Conrad that he was walking on salt, we caught him bending down to lick the ground. Thankfully, we put a stop to that–haha.
Unless you are there for a car race or an organized athletic activity, there’s not much to do on the salt flats other than take in the gorgeous scenery. Conrad, however, made his own fun…
After 30 minutes on the salt flats, we got back into Carpe and headed to our next stop: Lake Tahoe, CA! It’s only a 7-hour drive. Wish us luck! 🙂
