First stop: Newport, Rhode Island and “America’s Oldest Tavern.” The White Horse Tavern was founded in 1673 and now this beautiful historic building houses an upscale restaurant inside. There is a dress code, so make sure to plan ahead. Our children were very welcome, but we worked hard to keep them occupied so as not to spoil the ambience.
The highlights for us were, of course, the seafood. The clam chowder has a clear broth, which I’d never had before. It was much lighter than other clam chowders I’ve tasted and the clams are the star. And of course the oysters were fresh and delicious. The restaurant focuses on locally sourced ingredients and it really showed.
The White Horse Tavern is kid-friendly, but not kid-focused. A high chair was available for our youngest and we were able to find plenty of menu items that appealed to the whole family.
The history is what brought us here, but the food made us want to come back. Next time, though, for a date night!
