Great American Road Trip: Petrified Forest National Park

After a good snooze in our Wigwam, we piled into Carpe and continued down the “Mother Road” (or, along the path of what used to be Route 66). Our first stop of the day was Petrified Forest National Park, which is also home to the Painted Desert.

Photos with kids are hard…haha

We entered the Park from the south off of Highway 180–our plan was to drive through the park and connect to I-40 and continue our eastward journey. Coming from the south, our first stop was the Rainbow Forest Museum and the Giant Logs Trail. This 0.4 mile trail is perfect for little legs and is dotted with lots of beautiful colorful logs.

The colors are absolutely stunning!
These trees are beautiful and amazingly well preserved

Route 66 used to pass through the Park–you can still see the telephone poles that marked the way.

Though the vehicles may change, the landscape of Route 66 still captures the imagination. Loved seeing this 1932 Studebaker.

Continuing our journey north through the park, we entered the Painted Desert section. We didn’t have a lot of time to hike and explore, but we parked at an overlook and took in the views. And we worked on Conrad’s Junior Ranger workbook 🙂
