A Little Taste of Route 66: Standin’ on the Corner and Sleeping in a Wigwam

Life is about the journey. Route 66 was all about this. And, although Route 66 no longer exists in its original form, you can still feel its spirit at stops along Interstate 40 in Arizona.

First up, Winslow, AZ! True confession: I only wanted to stop here so that I could “stand on a corner in Winslow, AZ.” And that’s exactly what we did. Then we ate ice cream at a sweet soda fountain across the street watching the cars go by on the former Mother Road.

Standin’ on the corner in Winslow, Arizona!
Take it Easy!

We spent a total of one hour in Winslow, taking the required photos and enjoying a treat. Then back in the car for the drive to Holbrook, AZ where we will sleep in a Wigwam at Wigwam Motel #6!

I am probably a little too excited about this. Conrad is equally as thrilled!
There are classic cars parked in front of the Wigwams, giving the whole place a really cool vibe.
We even found Mater’s Grand Pappy!
The Cozy Cone Motel in “Cars” is supposedly based off of these Wigwam style motels.

Each of the Wigwams has a full bathroom, heat, and cable TV. Ours had two double beds and plenty of space for Isabella’s travel crib. For dinner, we grabbed some sandwiches from the grocery store across the street and had a little picnic inside of the Wigwam. 🙂

The next morning, we took some time to walk around the property, admire the classic cars, and play on the dinosaurs!

Juxtaposition.
Refreshed and ready for action!
A little boy’s dream!
This guy LOVED his wigwam experience!
Very into these dinosaurs
We have OFFICIALLY slept in a Wigwam!

Would we choose to sleep in a Wigwam again? Conrad and I definitely would–we love this kind of thing. John was a little lukewarm on the experience–he’s not as easily excitable as the rest of us. 😉 All in all, the atmosphere is wonderful and the wigwams were more comfortable than we expected. It was a memorable stop on our journey across America!

Next stop: Petrified Forest National Park, a short drive away! 🙂
